Michael Crystal currently spends his time providing strategic advice on privacy and data breaches to government and industry.
He is also involved with both federal and provincial governments on issues of policy and legislative drafting.

Michael Crystal articled with the Atlantic law firm Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales and was called to the Newfoundland the bar in 1992 and the Ontario bar in 1996. He then worked as a public defender for the Newfoundland Legal Aid Commission from 1991 to 1995. Since then he has worked for Borden Ladner Gervais, Gowlings Lafleur Henderson and Pinkofsky Lockyer before starting his own firm Crystal & Associates in 2001.
In 2015 Mr. Crystal joined Spiteri & Ursulak as a partner to leave their privacy , regulatory and class action team.
Mr. Crystal has worked primarily in the area of criminal law and has appeared at all levels of trial and appellate courts in Ontario, including the three appearances as lead counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada.
More recently, Mr. Crystal has developed a privacy practice. He has been retained by industry and the Senate to testify before the Canadian Senate committees on Human Rights, Industry and is currently scheduled to testify before the National Security committee relating to issues of privacy. Mr. Crystal is currently class counsel in five personal health information class actions. Most recently, he appeared as co-counsel before the Ontario Court of Appeal in Hopkins v. Kay ; a precedent setting case relating to the interplay between provincial personal health information legislation and the common law.
Finally, Mr. Crystal is currently speaking and giving papers to lawyers and industry players on data breach and cyber security.
